The PSP, The Prometheus or the DS?
Headlining the E3 this year (one of the most suprising E3s, moreso amplified by the info by Rob) is the GameBoy DS: Dual Screen/Developer's System.
What is even more surprising is the announcement of Sega's hat toss into the handheld ring. It's a nasty rumour as of now, but to tell the truth, if half of it is true, this is as system that I am incredibly interested in seeing.
Apparently the new Sega handheld's dimenions will have the length of a CD case, but only half the width, nothing on the depth so far. The seemingly new part is that it's taking a cue from the Phantom Console and iPOD, downloading games over the internet. An intriguing concept, possibly even greater fact that costs of the games will greatly decrease because of the lack of actualy CD/cartridge productions and distribution and possibility of patches being updated.
Another thing to add is that it seems that there is no mandatory subscription service like the Phantom.
As for the two main contenders, the DS and PSP....the DS truly impressed me the most with the possible innovations that they have at the same time. This system is really pushing the concept on how a handheld will work, without relying on gimmicks like phones, PDAs and internet usage.
The PSP on the other hand looks damn fucking sweet, sexier than the un-sexy DS, with some games that I really would love to play, especially Darkstalkers. However becuase it's demo was especially blaise, nothing special AT ALL, and has the problem of having too many games that seemed generic than actually diverse like the DS.
Who knows. Perhaps the DS is not suppose to compete with the PSP, because Nintendo does have a GBA sucessor in the works. So comparing these two systems can be entirely un-fair since the DS is most likely a system to be working with the GC and more importantly, the next Nintendo console system (at least I hope).
It's hard to say, but the DS certainly has my vote for gaming so far...but as for the potential of fighting games on the PSP, that is making me consider getting both.
